Reviewing the Maybelline New York Falsies Surreal Mascara
This new Maybelline New York Falsies Surreal Mascara has a lot to be live up to, given the success of the Maybelline Sky High which took the internet (TikTok specifically) by storm. The lash connoisseurs are back at it again with the showstopping, head turning, false-lashes-like mascara of dreams.
When Maybelline say they’re launching a good mascara, we believe them, because they are yet to let us down and they don’t charge an arm and a leg for a great pair of lashes. This time it comes in the form of a tightly packaged, super lightweight in an easy to hold lilac tube with an arched wand that can grip onto every lash without clumping. Or so it promises.

As a self-professed lash connoisseur I am widely critical of mascaras. I need length, volume and drama all in one with no heavy clumping in sight. Luckily I got just that with this Maybelline mascara. I expected nothing less as Maybelline seems to have mastered the art of making your lashes stretch miraculously as if they grew right before your eyes (no pun intended) all without breaking the bank.
The wand is not too big that it in-prints in the eyelids and smudges, yet big enough to coat most lashes at the same time. I combed the top lashes with its arched wand and didn't need too many swipes to see results. For the bottom lashes, I used what I call the toothbrush method, where I brush my bottom lashes sideways rapidly and gently, instead of combing them through, to get that spidery 80s Twiggy bottom lash effect without faff.
The formula didn’t crumble on me and my lashes stayed wispy all day long. The easy removal with an oil cleanser meant that I was excited to do it all over again the following day. Well done Maybelline, you passed the vibe check… again.

Full disclosure, I'm a Maybelline mascara stan. Throughout high school, The Falsies was where it was at. I've dabbled in the years since, but after Sky High launched in 2021? No competition. I'm lucky in my job that I get to try countless mascara formulas and wands, but Sky High's had me ever since I first tried it (with Lancome Hypnose a close second).
I love the length, definition and drama both give. As for Maybelline's newest recruit, Falsies Surreal, it's a good mascara, it definitely adds volume and beefs up lashes, but for the full triple threat of next level lift, volume and length, Sky High still has my heart.

The mega-watt wand is the star of the game with this mascara – thick and bristly, which makes it easy to separate lashes and create that fluffy, fluttery lash look without any of the clumping or smudging (a huge bonus in the book of someone who wears a lot of mascara).
I found the formula to be ever-so-slightly on the dry side, which meant it lacked the wow factor I want to achieve with my mascara; I like my lashes inky-black and thick with volume, which I'd need a couple more coats to achieve with this product. But if you're looking for natural, feathery lashes with XXL length, this is 100% the mascara for you.

As someone who has naturally long lashes, I'm always on the lookout for a mascara that can take my lashes to the next level without clumping or smudging. So trying the Maybelline New York Falsies Surreal Mascara. The arched shape that hugs the lashes and allows for easy application, even in the hard-to-reach corners. The formula itself is also quite smooth and doesn't clump easily, which is always a plus.
However, I did find that the mascara didn't fully live up to its claims of providing a “false lash" effect. While it definitely added some volume and length to my lashes, I wouldn't say it gave me the dramatic, full lashes I was hoping for. However, all things considered, it got pretty close.

Full disclosure: I'm not a mascara gal and I've never been one. Having been an avid lover of eyelash extensions for over 8 years, I barely ever wear mascara, unless I'm taking a break from extensions every now and then. That said, I've also not been blessed with naturally long, thick and curly eyelashes; in fact, I'd say mine are the opposite of that. So, when it comes to trying out new mascaras on the market, it genuinely takes a lot to impress me. Still, when I saw that the Maybelline New York Falsies Surreal Mascara has the word "falsies" in the name, I was intrigued to give it a go.
I enjoyed the highly pigmented formula, which resulted in a jet-black finish, and I also loved how the formula wasn't too quick-drying. However, if I'm being honest, I wouldn't say that it delivered as much volume and length as it promised, which is why I wasn't over-the-moon. That being said, I also see how it would work for people who have longer and thicker lashes to begin with, but personally, I wasn't a big fan (though that could be a case of me not enjoying wearing mascaras in general). In any case, it has a fair price point and adorable packaging, which definitely scored a few points in my book.
